The Problem with Conservation

Societal Norms

Did I catch your attention? I guess the problem isn't really anything to do with conservation,  but rather the general public's perception of conservation. Somewhere in our history, we forgot that we are supposed to steward the lands. This mentality of nature should happen over there and be protected, untouched. We should be out there exploring and thus learning from those experiences. Nature does not live in a vacuum; we are just as much a part of it as it is of us. So now we have to ask, "How do we change these societal norms?"

Get Outside

Go to your local nature center, where there is a wealth of information. Ok, I know that means you are technically inside a building, but many paths with trail heads near the building include signs with more details. Take a minute and read them. Make your "silly mental health hikes" have a lasting impact. As you walk, run, or bike, take time to notice with all your senses. What do you see, hear, smell, feel, and maybe even taste? Notice how these things change with each season! I find I can return to the same trail over and over again because each time I notice something different.

Research

Learn about the nations that lived on these lands and how they lived. Many of the indigenous people had traditions that nurtured nature, not stripped of all her resources. Learn about the ecoregion, which is based on land formations and habitat. As you can see, all of the maps are for the same area but provide different information. Look for your state's invasive species group. For me, that would be New York PRISM. These will provide a nice foundation for your stewardship!

Do Something

Anything! If you are tight on space, grow some herbs in the kitchen to use fresh with your cooking. If you have a bit more space, set up a small garden of veggies or plant a few pollinator powerhouse flowers. Volunteer with an organization near you, like the Albany Pine Bush Preserve, where I help with seed collection. This has helped me to identify flora and start to see the relationship with fauna.

Take what you have learned and start creating!
